The City of Atlanta Renames “Confederate Avenue” to “United Avenue”

Mayor Lance Bottoms enacts city ordinance renaming Confederate Avenue (Rosalind Bentley - AJC)

On this past Wednesday (October 2, 2018),  Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms enacted a city ordinance renaming Confederate Avenue with the stroke of her signature.

After public hearings were held by City Council Member Carla Smith beginning on September 20, the drive to complete this effort gained momentum.   The city legislation swiftly moved through Smith’s Utilities Committee to the full City Council where the action passed unanimously before arriving on Lance Bottoms desk.

The new street signs are scheduled to be installed before the end of 2018 in late November.  A formal ceremony will be tentatively held during the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend in January 2019.

Congratulations to Council Member Smith and the residents of the Grant Park and Ormewood Park neighborhoods surrounding the new “United Avenue” and “Trestletree Court.”
